The Culinary Chase is One Year Old!

It all started when I came back from a trip to Canada in 2006. I was in Halifax, NS and Saint John, NB and was pleasantly surprised by the diversity of food/restaurants available. This prompted excitement within and I wanted to get involved somehow in the food industry. When I got back to Hong Kong I asked a chef friend of mine if he knew of any courses in food journalism. He suggested I start a food blog. A ‘food’ what? He gave me some ideas and other food bloggers he knew or heard of. It took me about a month to collect my ideas, recipes and photos. I have to admit I was a bit unsure of how I would start and finally I said to myself that I just had to begin now or it would be never.

So, on the 25th of August, 2006 I published my first posting. I was so excited I couldn’t sleep that night. If someone had told me that one year on I would have over 100 people logging onto my site daily, I would not have believed them. As my numbers grow, I still get excited and I am ever more committed to continuing with my food blog.

As I look back on my 26 years of cooking (self taught, some from my Mom and some from my Grandmother), I often stop and wonder if my food style would have changed over the years had I not left Canada in August 1998. I’ve always had an interest in food from other countries but didn’t have the courage to try and cook myself. Asian food is now readily available in grocery stores back home and cooking shows do have Asian recipes so it is one of those questions I ask myself. It’s also a question that keeps me wanting to learn more of all cultures.

New beginnings are in store for The Culinary Chase as I will be posting from a new country next month! Yes, we are moving to Bangkok, Thailand! We are all excited about the move as we have vacationed in Thailand many times but never lived there.

The Culinary Chase’s Note: I still find it amazing even after living in Asia for 9 and a half years that this little girl from Saint John, NB has been blessed to experience this. What an experience for all of us! We are truly thankful that God keeps us under his wing.

Congrats on your 1st year and the move to Bangkok. I lived in Thailand for 3 years and have been back about 10 times, most recently right after the tsunnami. We;re thinking of another vacation there around the time of Songkran (damn, I love that festival!!!) in April. I’m hoping to see lots of good Thai recipes on here in the future. When are you leaving? Cheers Bill

What a beautiful note to close this post.

Congratulations on your first blog anniversary. While I have not been visiting your blog for a year, the past months for me has been a culinary treat. Thank you for sharing your wonderful food and I’m excited to see the things you make while in Thailand.

Happy Birthday! I have enjoyed your blog since finding you last winter. I remember the first time you commented on my blog, and I thought – wow! Someone from Hong Kong visited me!

Keep up the fabulousness! Good luck with your move. Thailand is a place I have always wanted to visit. I can’t wait to visit through your eyes.

    Congratulations!

Thailand seems to be close to “cottage country” for westerners in HK …I know many who have purchased in Phuket etc. We’ve joined the crowd and expect to spend a good bit of time in our second home – Krabi. FOOD is one of the reasons we love it so much.

I look forward to year 2 with recipes including the flavours and cultural tidbits of Thailand.
